Thank you for choosing to continue your studies in our Department, which stands as a pioneer in the field of Midwifery and ranks among the finest Departments within our University.

The Department’s success is built upon the high scientific and research standards, the international collaboration and expertise of our Professors, the unwavering commitment and efficiency of our administrative staff, the outstanding synergy between students and professors, our commendable ethos, the exceptional quality of our students, and our profound sense of responsibility for cultivating and delivering knowledge. We are particularly delighted because your remarkable quality adds value and contributes to sustaining this success.

The Department’s leadership, along with the Professors, Lecturers, Administrative Staff, and fellow students from previous years, are all here to assist you, both at the beginning of your academic journey and throughout your studies.

Our common vision and ambition are to ensure that our Department remains a top choice, a centre of excellence and highly appreciated as an outstanding, dynamic, and unparalleled institution in the realm of Midwifery. We invest in the future through the high-quality educational process and the pursuit of excellence in research. With confidence in your potential, I believe that as undergraduate students, you will actively participate in the educational process and strive to stay abreast of current scientific developments, thus contributing to our shared goals.

The practice and science of midwifery have ancient roots, with the first midwifery school in our country established in Athens in 1838. The Department of Midwifery at the University of West Attica is the country’s first university-level Department of Midwifery, celebrating 30 years since its establishment in higher education (originally as a Department of the TEI of Athens). Our Department’s curriculum encompasses a wide spectrum of knowledge and clinical skills in key disciplines such as Obstetrics and Midwifery Care, Gynecology and Gynecological Care, Neonatology and Neonatal Care, Family Planning, Genetics and Health Promotion, Reproductive Mental Health, Research Methodology, and Health Informatics. Furthermore, our Department is dedicated to nurturing critical and creative thinking in our students, as well as fostering empathy towards fellow human beings. This ensures that upon completing their studies, our graduates possess all the essential skills for a successful career in the demanding field of Midwifery, and they are well-prepared for further postgraduate and doctoral studies.

We extend our warmest welcome to you and have absolute confidence in your success in high spirits throughout this four-year educational journey in midwifery. Rest assured that we will stand by your side every step of the way.

Sincerely,

Claire Gourounti,

Associate Professor
